King’s Dogs
The heraldry of the royal family of the kingdom of Catage bears a royal
hunting hound, similar to the Scottish deerhound of our world, holding a
rabbit in its jaws. The Royal Lavalle-Fontaine family took great pride
in their hunting and animal husbandry, and did not let the limited space
of the city-state stop their hobby of choice — concessions were always
made to the maintenance of great park-estates, tended to by woodsmen who might live
whole lives in a city-locked wilderness. Among these trees, in kennels
finer than the houses of even some well off industrialists, once lived
the Kings Dogs.
When King Thomas Lavalle-Fontaine was deposed, his kennels were the
source of much consternation to the revolutionaries. Nobody was
over-fond of the creatures but a mass killing of dogs would be an ill
omen for the start of a new regime. The beasts were simply let free and
promptly became the city-state’s most hated nuisance animal. Packs of
them run feral in the streets, a menace to pets, children, and the poor.
Even the staunchest royalists are loathe to be around them (though they
have no qualms about incorporating their image into symbolism, or
invoking their attacks as divine punishment for the evils of revolution
and proof of the failures of the new leadership to provide).
In much the same fashion as unwanted human prisoners, packs of King’s
Dogs are sometimes corralled and then released outside the Wall of
Catage. These packs are happy to stick close to the wall, scavenging
from the industrialist’s camps and harrying wildlife and new exiles
alike. Not many packs venture further north than the river.
When you encounter Kings Dogs in the wilds and roll for their numbers,
for every 6+ that appears on a single dice, a single dog is mysteriously
well groomed.
